Adding a Network Printer to a Macintosh OS10.4x

During the transition from network printers being on the china server to the new canton server, please follow these steps to remove the china printers from your printers and faxes folder, in system preferences before adding the newly renamed printers (and setting one as your default).

Belfast printers are not affected by this, only network printers formerly on the china server.

Separate instructions are published for Macintosh OS 10.5x [leopard].

  • To remove a printer, [formerly on china] click the Apple icon
  • Select System Preferences
  • In the System Preferences window, click on the Print & Fax icon. The Print & Fax window will display
  • Highlight the printer you wish to remove
  • Click the - button to remove a printer to the printer list  and the entry will disappear

To add a network printer:

  • Click the Apple icon
  • Select System preferences
  • Open Printers and Faxes icon

  • Click + [Add] button to add a printer

  • While holding down the Option key,  press  the "More Printers..." button

  • Click the drop down menu at the top and select Advanced

  • Click the Device drop down menu and select "Windows Printer via SAMBA"

  • In the Device Name field, type in the name of the printer,  Ex. Pgill 126
  • In the Device URL field type:
    smb://macprint:del1sh@bcis/canton/<name of printer>



Example: smb://macprint:del1sh@bcis/canton/Pgill-126-A    NOTE:
BE SURE TO TYPE: del1 ("de" letter "l" then number "1") before sh@bcis... 

A. Click the Printer Model drop down menu and select the manufacturer of the printer (Most likely HP)
B.  Select the Model of the printer from the list Ex. HP Laserjet 4000 series
C. Click the Add button


  • The printer should now appear in the printer list.
  • Select the printer and
  • Click the Printer Setup button

  • Click the drop down menu at the top of the window and select "Installable Options"
  • Select the options that come with this printer
  • Click the Apply changes button (if you make any)
  • Close the Printer Info window
