Sophos Anti-Virus: Installation Process for Windows

These Sophos steps guide you through the process of downloading and installing Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows. You need an Internet connection to obtain a copy of the installation program. Be aware you must also first uninstall existing anti-virus programs. (If you do not have an internet connection, contact Help Desk Services at helpdesk@bates.edu or (207)786-8222)

NOTE: If CCAA is not allowing internet access, please try to update your current anti-virus software (Norton and McAfee or Sophos allowed) before following these instructions.

Uninstall existing anti-virus programs: If you already have Sophos currently installed, this process will uninstall your current version and updates will be automatic. If you are unsure if you have an anti-virus program, do this step and check:

  • Open My Computer > Control Panels > Add/Remove Programs
  • Select you anti-virus program (i.e. Norton, McAfee, Command, AVG, etc.)
  • Click button to Remove
  • Click Remove All
  • Then restart your machine

Downloading and Installing Sophos Antivirus
Click this link and Login with Bates username and network password,
Under Contents of Sophos, choose and click on Windows, then double click ESXP.exe to Download and Install Sophos

When you are prompted to save the file, save it to an easily accessible location (e.g. Desktop).
After the download is completed double click the ESXP.exe icon

Installation should complete automatically. Click OK

If you do not
have an entry for Sophos Anti-Virus under Start, All Programs, right click on the blue shield in the system tray, click on update now, and the program should install as well as the updater. Typically a window appears with 2 folders that updates files 1 of 2 with files going from one folder to the other. This window closes automatically. Then proceed to scanning. 

Creating a New Scan:

  • Open Sophos Anti-Virus (located under Program Files)
  • Click Set up a new scan
  • Enter a new Scan Name (e.g. "Immediate Scan")
  • Place a check in "Local Disk (C:)." If you have multiple disk drives (e.g. "Local Disk (D:)" ), place a check mark in there also
  • Click the Save button


Configure Scan Options:

  • Click on Configure this scan (see screen shot above)
  • Make sure you are under the Scanning tab, and that the options match the following:
  • Scanning level: Normal

  • Other scanning options: all boxes should be checked

Under Disinfection tab:

  • Check Disinfect items that contain a virus and
  • Under Other actions against infected files, make sure Move to: is selected. The path name should already be filled in
  • Click Apply, then OK
  • When you return to the Sophos main dialog, click on Save



On-Access Scan Settings:

  • Click on Configure Sophos Anti-Virus
  • Click on On-Access scanning
  • Scanning level should should be set to Normal
  • Other Scanning options should be as follows:
  • archive files
  • Include Macintosh viruses
  • Scan all files
  • On-access scanning behavior options should be as follows:
  • Enable on-access scanning for this computer
  • Check files: On read
  • Check files: On write
  • Check files: On rename

For Disinfection settings:

  • Automatic disinfection options should be as follows:
  • Disinfect items that contain a virus
  • Under Other actions against infected files, make sure Move to: is selected. The path name should already be filled in
  • Click Apply, then OK

Updates and scans should now be automatic.
