A geographer by training, Professor Pieck’s research highlights the material and discursive struggles over nature at local-to-global scales with a regional focus on Latin America, especially the Andes-Amazon. She is particularly interested in transnational social movements, focusing on Latin American indigenous politics and their intersections with US environmentalism. Professor Pieck is currently also developing a new research project examining state rule and networks of civic resistance to regional integration initiatives in South America. Before coming to Bates, Professor Pieck was a post-doctoral lecturer and research associate in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Chicago.
