Bates senior Cecilia Grissa (Doylestown, Pa.) advanced the furthest for the Bobcats. After dropping her initial Singles Championship Bracket match to Middlebury's Amy Berkman (7-5, 6-2), Grissa won two straight matches in the Consolation Bracket to make the quarterfinals. Grissa topped Wheaton's Catherine Teague (3-6, 6-4, 1-0[7]) and Smith College's Diana Fiumefreddo (6-2, 3-6, 1-0[3]) before bowing out to Wellesley's Meghan Stubblebine (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) in the quarterfinals. Grissa also teamed up with sophomore Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) for a victory in the Doubles Championship Bracket, defeating Jen Murphy and Laura Stein of Amherst College 8-6. Piacquad and senior Mallika Raghavan (Chappaqua, N.Y.) also competed for Bates in the Singles Championship. Piacquad lost her Championship Bracket match to seventh-seeded Amanda Berck of Middlebury, but went on to post a win in the Consolation Bracket, downing Ana Katz of Brandeis (2-6, 6-0, 1-0[5]). Raghavan was defeated by Amherst's Monica Snyder in the Championship Bracket, but she also proceeded to win a match in the Consolation Bracket, over Aurora Lormeus of UMass-Boston (6-2, 6-2). The Bobcats next compete at a dual match at Wesleyan University on Oct. 7. |
