Women's cross country team shows well at Open New Englands

Senior co-captain Aviva Goldstein (Manchester, N.H.) finished first for Bates in the varsity race, covering the 5-kilometer course in 85-degree weather at Franklin Park in 19:52, good for 89th place out of 299 runners. Following her for the Bobcats were first-year Jennifer Mitton (Reisterstown, Md.) in 105th, junior Allie Goldstein (Needham, Mass.) in 111th, sophomore Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) in 139th and senior Molly Balentine (Hampden, Maine) rounding out the top five in 180th place overall. Bates showed considerable depth in the sub-varsity race, where sophomore Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) led the Bobcats to fourth out of 22 teams with a time of 19:51, good for 10th place out of 263 runners. Also in Bates' top five were sophomore Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) in 31st, sophomore Alison Leonard (North Granby, Conn.) in 43rd, first-year Megan McClelland (Keene, N.Y.) in 45th and first-year Alexandria Alberto (Concord, Mass.) in 46th. Bates will host the State of Maine Cross Country Championships next Saturday at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The men's race will start at 11 a.m., with the women following at noon. |
