2. Come back to Bates for Homecoming Weekend Oct. 19-21
Come back to Bates for a crisp fall weekend. Homecoming Weekend highlights include a leadership conference for all Bates volunteers, Reunion Planning Workshop for classes ending in "3" and "8," a Friends of Bates Athletics reception, a BOLD (Bobcats of the Last Decade) barbecue, the second annual GAME Day with the Office of Career Services, and Green Horizons, the acclaimed Museum of Art exhibition exploring sustainability. Cheer on the Bobcats as they play soccer, field hockey and football against Middlebury! www.bates.edu/homecoming.xml

3. Slideshow: Orientation 2007
Orientation for the Class of 2011, held Aug. 27–Sept. 6, helped ease first-year students into Bates life by offering something for everyone: lugging belongings into residence halls, exploring Maine's Great North Woods by canoe, enjoying barbecues and inflatables, and considering Bates historian John Cole's sly, earthy Convocation talk about the correspondence between the teenage Marie Antoinette and her mother, Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa. In this slide show we share a few of these experiences. www.bates.edu/x167630.xml

4. Bates joins national online college information initiative
Bates is participating with more than 600 independent U.S. colleges and universities in offering detailed information online through a Web site coordinated by the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. www.bates.edu/x168233.xml

5. Bates Business Networks fall events
The Bates Business Networks are kicking off the fall with events in Boston, New York City and other cities around the country. Topics include universal healthcare, the art market and careers in sales. These events are exciting opportunities to network professionally and socially with Bates alumni, parents and friends in your area, and to learn more about what Bates graduates are doing in a variety of career fields. Registration and more information: http://community.bates.edu/events

6. End of an era: Leigh Campbell '64 retires
Leigh Campbell '64 — known and loved by thousands of Bates alumni and students as Bates sports fan extraordinaire, official scorekeeper at basketball games, admissions and financial aid counselor, mensch — retired this summer after 34 years of service to his alma mater. We know that there are stories to tell and memories to share, and we're sure many of you will want to send your best wishes to Leigh. Please send thoughts to Marianne Nolan Cowan '92 in the Alumni and Parent Programs office at mcowan@bates.edu before Sept. 20 and they will be presented to Leigh in a collection later this month.

7. College providing audio streaming for home football games
Bates is making live play-by-play of 2007 season home football games available to listeners via the Internet or telephone. www.bates.edu/x167956.xml

8. Bates partners with Zipcar to bring car-sharing to campus
Bates College and Zipcar, the world's largest car-sharing service, are partnering to make Zipcars available on campus to faculty, staff and students as an environmentally friendly alternative to the costs and hassles of keeping a car on campus. www.bates.edu/x167273.xml

9. Bates People in the News
With Katrina's second anniversary fresh in the public mind, risk-management expert Howard Kunreuther '59, a professor at Penn's Wharton School, used a New York Times op-ed to offer a different approach to mitigating financial consequences of natural disasters. Meanwhile, Bates was on TV as the local NBC affiliate covered the College's new Zipcar service, and the ABC station mentioned the MacArthur "genius grant" awarded to Corey Harris '91. Finally, the Portland Press Herald anticipated Ken Burns' World War II series with the story of a pilot from Bates who was lost and found again. www.bates.edu/bates-in-the-news.xml
