Grissa reaches quarterfinals in No. 1 singles at NEWITT

AMHERST, Mass. -- Bates senior Cecilia Grissa made it to to the quarterfinals of the No. 1 singles flight to highlight the Bobcats' efforts at the annual New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Division III Championship, held over the weekend at Amherst College.

Grissa (Doylestown, Pa.) won two straight matches before falling to eventual flight champion Kristen Raymond of Bowdoin in the quarterfinals. Grissa defeated Jess Porter of Nichols College 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 32, then topped Brenna Driscoll of Trinity College 6-4, 6-4.

The Bobcats also claimed a victory in the No. 2 doubles flight, with seniors Mallika Raghavan (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Liz Fleming (Weston, Conn.) topping Dominika Hudcova and Maile Macleod of Simmons College 9-7 in the Round of 32.

Representing Bates elsewhere at the tournament were sophomore Alexandra Piacquad (Yardley, Pa.) at No. 2 singles, Raghavan at No. 3 singles, sophomore Jean Gulliver (Falmouth, Maine) at No. 4 singles, first-year Eliza Kano-Bower (Wayland, Mass.) at No. 5 singles, Fleming at No. 6 singles and Grissa and Piacquad teaming up at No. 1 doubles.

The Bobcats are finished for the fall season and will resume play in the early spring of 2008.
