Personal essays are short pieces that take a fresh, different, poignant or humorous look at a traditional experience. Here are two: one by author Nick Basbanes '65, the other by educator Todd Nelson '78.
They are not opinion pieces but instead offer specific insights, a detailed sense of discovery from experience. They will tend to focus closely on a few details, rather than painting an entire picture. Humor, wit, and whimsy work well. Topics do not need to be directly Bates-related. Length, at maximum, is 750 words.
