Application Process

The Bates Summer Scholars Program is open only to entering Bates first-year students. You must apply for Early or Regular Admission to Bates College by the November 15 or January 1 deadlines. Once you are offered admission to the College and have accepted the offer of admission (no later than May 1, 2009), you may apply to participate in the Bates Summer Scholars Program.

NOTE: This is a competitive program; submitting an application late will impact your selection, so be sure to apply by May 1!

The program is limited to ten incoming first-year students. Bates Summer Scholars are selected by a committee of faculty and admissions staff.

If you are interested in participating in the Bates Summer Scholars Program, please send a letter of application to Bates by May 1, 2009. In the letter of application, you should:

1) describe your interests in math and science, including your high school work and your math and science plans for Bates;

2) explain why you want to participate in the Summer Scholars Program;

3) describe what you will bring to the program if you are chosen as a Summer Scholar.

Information from your admissions file is also considered in the selection process.

The scholarship committee reviews all applications and identifies finalists. The committee conducts brief interviews with finalists before making the final selection.
