Uncommon View
A postcard from Bates

The new dining Commons, along with the neat green and gray expanse of Alumni Walk leading up to it, is seen from the upper reaches of Pettengill Hall on Oct. 25. The trees populating Alumni Walk are a cultivar of Betula papyrifera, or paper birch. Seen at left, a field goal away from Commons, is Garcelon Field. At right is Roger Williams Hall, which, with the opening of new housing at the foot of Mount David, has ended its nearly 100 years as a residence. At far right is the sloping peak of Ladd library. The Bill and Hedge Hall will both be repurposed for academic or administrative use. The new dining Commons opens this winter.  Updates on campus improvements are available here.
