Somewhat lost in the disappointment of Bates' 31-7 loss to Bowdoin on Saturday was a respectable performance by the Bobcat defense, which held the Polar Bears to just 116 rushing yards on 44 carries (a 2.6-yard average) and only 111 net passing yards.
The clear leader of the Bates defense was senior Anthony Begon (Peabody, Mass.), who recorded a team-high and career-high 13 tackles, including nine solo takedowns, from a position not usually associated with high numbers in that category.
Four and a half of Begon's tackles resulted in lost yardage for Bowdoin. Begon also collected one sack, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry. He leads Bates in tackles for a loss (10.0) and sacks (4.0), and ranks third in both categories in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. |
