Francisca López is Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. She specializes in contemporary Spanish literature and culture, with particular attention to politics of representation in narrative fiction, film and television. Her scholarly interests focus on the connections between literature/popular culture and other disciplines, such as history, sociology, and philosophy. In her earlier monograph and articles, she concerns herself with the social construction of gender and the question of how women writers deal with the political, cultural, and social environment they inhabit, focusing especially on how gender may determine certain discursive practices and uses of language. Her more recent essays, while still concerned with gender, reflect her new theoretical preoccupations: 1) the relationship between global and local cultures and how this relationship influences definitions of self and nation in the present; and 2) the function of historical narratives in contemporary Spain as vehicles to redefine national identity.
