Bates College speaks with many voices and messages, and has an ever-growing need to communicate clearly and persuasively with many different audiences. In the competitive environment of American higher education, it is important to show our institutional cohesiveness through consistent, professional communications.

These publications standards are intended to help everyone at Bates who writes, edits or designs for print or the Web.

The Editorial Style Guide helps you keep your reader focused on content without being distracted by variations in spelling and punctuation from one page to the next.

The Graphics Style Guide spells out how the system is to be used on all forms of printed communication: stationery, memos, business cards, etc.  PDF files of the Bates wordmark variations are available online.

For further details about the Web guidelines, please contact our Web Communications Manager at extension 8248.

Communications and Media Relations is prepared to answer any questions and help implement these guidelines.

I trust you will find that these guidelines provide flexibility to achieve your unit's goals while benefiting the entire College.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Bryan McNulty
Director of Communications
and Media Relations
