PHIPPSBURG, ME
9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Please note: earlier start time!

Bates-Morse Mountain
Meet at the Morse Mountain parking lot. (Directions are listed below.)

Conservation Day in Phippsburg! Join Nancy Sferra, The Nature Conservancy’s Director of Science and Stewardship, and David Baker ’70, representing Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area, for a workday at the beach!  Possible projects include pruning and trail cleanup.  Wear sturdy shoes or boots, old clothes, and bring work gloves.  We will provide sunscreen.  We will keep you busy, rain or shine.

Box lunches will be provided by Bates College.

Important update:  The bulldozers have moved in at Shortridge--our coastal center.  Shortridge land and building are being modified from old code Residential to meet new and proper code -- Education and Scientific Research.  Because Shortridge is currently closed, the only bathroom facilities are those provided by Mother Nature.  If this is too rustic for you, please consider volunteering at one of our other service projects in Lewiston or Portland.

Directions to the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area in Phippsburg, ME

From Lewiston, head towards Bath via U.S. Route 1.

As you approach Bath, exit Route 1 on Route 209 south (High Street) towards Phippsburg/Small Point/Sebasco/ Popham Beach.

This is a ramp on the right, just after an Exxon Station and before you get to the bridge or the Bath Iron Works crane.  Turn right on High Street at the end of the ramp.

Follow Route 209 South for 11.6 miles.  Where Route 209 turns sharply left to Popham Beach, continue straight ahead on Route 216 for .4 mile.

You will see NO PARKING signs on both sides of the road as you approach the entrance to Morse Mountain.  Turn left on Morse Mountain Road.

Drive about 350 feet to the entrance of the parking lot on the left. In the summer, there is a gatekeeper and booth at this lot.  When the lot is full, no more vehicles are permitted to enter until parked vehicles leave. Vehicles may not park on Morse Mountain Road or on Route 216.

A two-mile hike leads through woodlands, salt marsh, up 180-foot Morse Mountain to an overlook, and on to Seawall Beach.  Dogs and other pets are not permitted in any season.
