"You find us in the midst of important renovation and reorganization projects, both tangible and intangible, dedicated to making more and better room for the free play of ideas," said President Elaine Tuttle Hansen as she opened the 2007 academic year at Convocation.
Indeed, the major Bates stories of calendar 2007 arose from the various "renovation and reorganization" projects that President Hansen alluded to in her address: construction of a new dining Commons, new student residence and Alumni Walk; introduction of a major revision to the College's general education requirements and major new funding for the faculty; heightened awareness around issues of sustainability; and cooperative work to redefine diversity at Bates.
