Competitive fellowship applicants often:

  • Attend information meetings and consult with the Graduate Fellowships Advisor, Sagaree Sengupta (ssengupt@bates.edu)
  • Have a high GPA
  • Speak well in public
  • Have knowledge of current events through reading newspapers/magazines such as The New York Times, US News and World Report, Newsweek, etc.
  • Are involved with the community through volunteer activities
  • Participate in meaningful extracurricular activities
  • Serve on College committees
  • Know a foreign language
  • Have a vision of their future goals and a plan for how to reach them
  • Have a desire to make a positive difference in the world
  • Develop relationships with professors who will write letters of recommendation, offer research  advice and fellowship guidance
  • Have internship/research experience
  • Publish during their undergraduate years
