Competitive fellowship applicants often:
- Attend information meetings and consult with the Graduate Fellowships Advisor, Sagaree Sengupta (ssengupt@bates.edu)
- Have a high GPA
- Speak well in public
- Have knowledge of current events through reading newspapers/magazines such as The New York Times, US News and World Report, Newsweek, etc.
- Are involved with the community through volunteer activities
- Participate in meaningful extracurricular activities
- Serve on College committees
- Know a foreign language
- Have a vision of their future goals and a plan for how to reach them
- Have a desire to make a positive difference in the world
- Develop relationships with professors who will write letters of recommendation, offer research advice and fellowship guidance
- Have internship/research experience
- Publish during their undergraduate years
