Access to Library Indexes and Databases

Information & Library Services Links

Please visit the many resources and services from the ones listed below.

Off campus access to Ladd Library indexes and databases is now available by direct login without any proxy server configuration needed. This connection works with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, as well as all supported web browsers without any need for additional configuration. Naxos streaming audio service access will be handled through contacting Help Desk Services.

Begin by clicking on the desired index or database link from the Ladd web site:

  • If prompted, accept the website certificate for vpn.bates.edu permanently
  • Click ok

Next a login screen appears requiring you to:

  • Enter your Bates username and  network password
  • Click login

If your browser has popups enabled, a toolbar window will stay open to indicate that you are still connected to Bates. This can be minimized to the task bar.

When you minimize the toolbar window, or if popups are disabled, a widget will appear in the upper right corner of the browser window with the following options:

This button allows you to move the widget from the top right side of the screen to the top left
This button redisplays the toolbar window as pictured above
This button returns the user to the Ladd Library home page
This button closes the connection and logs the user out.

Choosing to log out will prompt the following message(s),
Click ok to logout, or cancel to continue the connection

The closing screen appears with best practices on exiting your session: emptying the browser cache, deleting any downloaded files, and closing the browser.

You can surf to other web sites outside this connection, and return to searching Bates resources without having to login, unless you logout, time out, or close the browser. Clicking on a index or database link will give the login prompt again to resume searches.

If you do not see these screens and steps, or are not prompted directly for your username and password, it may be necessary to follow the proxy server setup instructions for your type of computer or network connection. (Proxy server procedure being phased out Winter 2008)

NOTE: On campus users do not have to login to use these resources.
