Dartmouth leads after first day of Bates Winter Carnival

2008 RUMFORD, Maine -- Defending NCAA champion Dartmouth College took the early lead after the first day of the three-day Bates College Winter Carnival, which kicks off the 2008 Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) winter carnival season. Alpine ski events at Sunday River have been pushed back one day due to Friday's warm and rainy local weather. Saturday's slate will include men's and women's slalom, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Sunday River in Bethel, as well as the Men's and Women's 10K Classic nordic races, which begin at 9 a.m. at Black Mountain in Rumford. The Bates Carnival will conclude on Sunday with the giant slalom at Sunday River. Dartmouth leads with 176 points, 26 more than runner-up Middlebury, thanks in part to first-place performances in both the Women's 5K Free Technique and Men's 10K Free Technique races. Dartmouth won the women's race as a team, while on the men's side Colby College collected the most points. First-years lead the charge for Bates women A trio of first-year skiers led the Bates women by taking spots 22 through 24, scoring 54 points combined. Ingrid Knowles (Cumberland, Maine) came in 22nd in a time of 14:08.8, followed by Kristen Gill (Jackson, N.H.) in 23rd at 14:10.6 and Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in 24th at 14:14.3. Close behind was sophomore Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) in 33rd and junior Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.) in 38th. For the Bates men, junior Dylan Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.) finished 13th out of 95 skiers with a time of 23:46.3 and 22 championship points. Junior Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) placed 19th in 24:00.7, sophomore Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) was right behind in 21st (24:03.2), with senior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) and junior Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine) finishing 26th and 28th, respectively.
