Men's tennis opens season at NAIA power Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH , Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University men’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 win against Bates as the Bobcats officially began their spring season Wednesday afternoon at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles, ranked third in the NAIA, are now 4-0 on the year, while Bates falls to 1-1 on the year, including a 9-0 win at Wesleyan on Oct. 7.

Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov started things off for the Eagles at the top of the doubles lineup, defeating Bates junior Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) 8-0. The tandem of Carlos Bes Comeras and Jan Hoekzema topped sophomores Max Berger (Concord, N.H.) and Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) 8-2 at the No.2 spot and Tomoaki Yasuda and Istvan Bolgar bested sophomore Mike Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and senior Danilo Acosta (Quito, Ecuador) 8-2 at the third position to complete the doubles sweep.

Bolgar was the first off the court for the Eagles in singles play as he downed sophomore Zach Fenno (Armonk, N.Y.) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. Bes Comeras was not far behind as he easily dispatched Reiss 6-0, 6-1 to score the clincher for the fourth time this season.

Yasuda also dropped just one game at the No. 5 spot as he downed Acosta 6-1, 6-0. Hizak defeated Stein 6-0, 6-2, Lazarov held off Rupasinghe 6-2, 6-4 in the most contested match of the day at No. 2 and Hoekzema closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Berger at the fourth position.

Bates will play at Babson College on Feb. 29 at 3:30 p.m.
