Women's squash to face Bowdoin at CSA Team Nationals

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Bates College women's squash team will compete for its fourth Kurtz Cup in five years starting Friday at the 2008 College Squash Association Women's Team Nationals, hosted by Princeton University.

The Bobcats are seeded 13th overall and thus play in the Kurtz Cup (B) Division for seeds 9 through 16. Bates will play rival and 12th seed Bowdoin College on Friday at noon at Princeton's Dillon courts. The Bobcats (10-9) finished their regular season with a 6-3 loss at Bowdoin (11-9), which broke Bates' 10-match win streak against the Polar Bears. The winner will face the winner between No. 9 Williams and No. 16 Tufts on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Jadwin.

Depth and balance have been the Bobcats' hallmark this season. Only two players have lost more matches than they've won, and one of them, sophomore Hannah Laverty (Brooklyn, N.Y.), has faced every opponent's No. 1 player and still has managed to post a respectable 8-11 record after moving up from Bates' No. 3 spot last season. The further one goes down the lineup, the more frequent the wins. Junior Margot Webel (Locust Valley, N.Y.) and first-year Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) sport identical records of 12-7 at the seventh and eighth positions, respectively, while junior Sophie Runquist (Kent, Conn.) and first-year Anna Hogeland (Williamstown, Mass.) are a combined 14-6, mostly swapping turns at the No. 9 position (Runquist is 8-4, while Hogeland is 6-2).
