March 29, 2008

Q: Hi! We've had soooooo much buttermilk pancakes recently - in the mornings, at the grill as buttermilk pancake bar, as a silver dollar bar...Could we have more frequent rotation of bran/multigrain/oatmeal pancakes please? Thank you!
A: I will take a look at the menu and see what we can do.

Q: I saw the response that lumped condoms in with tobacco as items that would not be sold at Milt's. Don't you think this is a little old fashioned? Selling condoms does not promote promiscuity, but responsible and informed sexual behavior. Access to condoms is a public health issue not a morality issue. I'm not trying to be difficult. I just think that the dismissal of the idea of selling condoms at Milt's was a little flippant.
A: I do not think this is old fashion or flippant,  rather there is no need to compete with the Health Center where they are available for free.

Q: The new waffle batter is great.  Please keep it just the way it is.  Also, it would help to bring back the spatulas.  The new batter is pretty thick and a lot of it sticks to the cup.
A: Thanks. Will do on the spatulas.

Q: There is a rumour going around that we only get 21 meals per week now, is this true?  I always thought our meal plan was unlimited....
A: We had a new individual working the door who did not realize that students could come in as many times as they wanted. This has been corrected.

Q: There is a rumour going around that we only get 21 meals per week now, is this true?  I always thought our meal plan was unlimited....
A: Individuals were not allowed to re-enter at one meal because we had a new individual on the door who did not realize that students could come in as often as they wanted. This has been corrected and to my knowledge has not happened again. The meal plan has not changed and students may eat/come into Commons as often as they like during the meal period.

Q: The mashed sweet potatoes were certainly an  interesting treat. Please serve again!
A: Thanks .

Q: The weather is FINALLY getting warmer and that means it's time for iced coffee!! Where is it??? Can we have it back please?
A: We can take a look and providing this.

Q: I always see all natural oat nut bread, but never all natural whole wheat. Can we please get the all natural whole wheat as well? Thanks
A: We can look into this.

March 26, 2008

Q: I have heard good things about the pizza but have only gotten to have it once because there has only been a vegan option once.  Please bring back vegan pizza!
A: Actually this is not true. There is a vegan option available at every meal.

Q: I have heard good things about the pizza but have only gotten to have it once because there has only been a vegan option once.  Please bring back vegan pizza!
A: Ok, please accept y my apologies. When I responded this am that there is always a vegan pizza available I was not thinking about cheese- which us one of my favorite foods- so the correct answer is that you are correct that there is not a vegan pizza option available very often, but we can look at changing this.

Q: Can the ice-coffee make a return?
A: Yes it can and it will...

March 25, 2008

Q: way too often.....come on
A: Thanks for your comments.

Q: Your red cabbage is just totally awesome!
A: Thanks.

Q: the formatting is terrible, it makes it very difficult to read and distinguish between the different stations and meals (breakfast lunch dinner)
A: Let us see what can be done.

Q: Hi the seafood cakes served a few weeks before were SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD :) Can we please have this as an item on the regular menu ? Thanks PS: keep up the good work. u guys are amazing.
A: They are on the menu as a regular item

Q: Can we please have chunky chicken salad in the deli bar ? Thanks !
A: Can do

March 21, 2008

Q: when are you going to post the new hours of  new commons and milt's on the website?
A: Working on it..

March 20, 2008

Q: To all the Commons workers: You are so good to us. Bates is VERY lucky. Love, A senior who doesn't want to graduate
A: Thanks for your kind thought.

Q: Hello, I will be graduating soon. I love the mac and cheese you make more than ANYTHING! Can we please have it more often? Thanks! You guys are doing a fantastic job!
A: Thanks for your comments.

Q: Lately the vegan bar continues to amaze. It's by far the best station at Commons, and I find the food very satisfying. Please keep it up!
A: Thanks

Q: The jerk chicken served yesterday for lunch for amazing. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. Thank you Commons !
A: Your welcome.

March 18, 2008

Q: Pasta w/ Tuna & Artichokes was amazing tonight! The lentil soup was also great, but can we just have it without the rice mixed in? Just lentils would be amazing. thanks!
A: Can do. Thanks for writing

Q: The vegan bar is like fine dining!!!
A: Thanks

Q:is there any chance we might be able to get a slotted serving spoon for the strawberries?  I would love to have a waffle that doesn't get all soggy with strawberry juice.
A: Can do.

March 17, 2008

Q: Marcias pasta is different in the new commons.  It is a lot lighter colored and creamier.  I like the old one better.
A: There should be no difference. Let me check the recipe.

Q: red cabbage with apple, onion, and fennel: simply amazing! I cannot believe the quality of the food on the vegan bar. And I've always liked the red cabbage- but the added tastes tonight were truly awesome! Please serve again! The Irish potatoes were really nice too- just like all the new vegetable creations I've been seeing. Keep it up.
A: Thanks for writing

Q: The veggie patties with salsa are really tasty.  However, my friends and I really like them on buns.  When you have garden burgers and veggie patties at the vegan bar, could you put out buns, too?  This evening there were no buns anywhere, including in the bread box.
A: Let me see what we can do.

March 13, 2008

Q: i loved the seafood cakes tonight, they were all out when i went back for more, will we have them again?
A: We will indeed be serving this item again.

March 12, 2008

Q: The grilled asian tuna steaks that were offered for lunch last week were Phenominal!!!!  Commons fish usually hasn't been very good in the past  (no offense) but this was great!  It should be put on a regular rotation
A: Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

March 10, 2008

Q: oatmeal choc chip cookies at lunch today were amazing. please keep them coming.
A: Will do.

Q: I love new commons!  You all have done a wonderful job and I am so impressed by how seamless the transition was for us students.  I am just hoping that the recipe for General Tso's tofu didn't get left behind in old commons...love you guys!!
A: It has gone nowhere, as it matter of fact it was on the menu just a week ago.

Q: I absolutely love new commons, but there's one thing that drives me slightly nuts: it's really hard to get a spoon, a fork, and a knife without walking all around the room.  Honestly, I've yet to find a silverware station that has all three (many are just spoons or just forks and knives).  Would it be possible to have one big silverware station like we had in old Commons?  Maybe in the back by the trays?
A: We are in the process of addressing this issue and once the silverware stations arrive this should alleviate your concerns.

Q: The 'make your own casarole' station on Saturday was great!  It was fun to put together and yummy to eat.  I hope this stays in the rotation as frequently as possible! Also, last year I really liked eating the... I think it was called mushroom hodgepodge... it was basically brown rice and mushrooms.  There is a seperate dish called something like brown rice and mushroom pilaf.  The difference is that the pilaf has onions and the hodgepodge did not, and I really can't eat onions :(  Is there any chance the hodgepodge can make an occasional return, or that the onions can be served on the side of the pilaf for those onion lovers out there? Thanks for everyone's hard work in the new commons... the main problem now is chasing us out after closing when we're still enjoying the nice lighting in the new building!
A: Thanks for you enthusiastic response .  As for the hodgepodge it is serve off the vegan station.

Q: Brick oven white vegetable lasagna is AMAZING!!! Gobs of white, cheesy goodness are extremely satisfying, and even the presentation was quite nice! I can't believe how much the quality of this dish has improved over old commons.
A: Thanks for your kind words. Glad you enjoyed the lasagna.

March 7, 2008

Q: Still loving the new commons but...
 1) Can we have shredded carrots in the salad bar please?
 2) The soda is always flat...I need me my fizz!
 3) The website is always wrong, is there anything you can do?
A: We can put shredded carrots on the salad bar as a rotational item. We are presently having some issues with the soda and are working through them. As for the website this is really out of our hands . We are working with I.S. to make the necessary corrections.

March 6, 2008

Q: Are we going to get a fancier clock in the future?  Also it would be nice if the greeter's table fit better with the rest of the building
A: The clocks that were put up are the standard bates clocks with satellite syncing capacity. To make a long answer short, no.

Q: Don;t get me wrong, I like the idea of new recipes, there is definately room for improvement now that we are in the new building.  But, I am not a fan of any of the new stuff from tonight (riblets, popcorn chicken) and stick with regular pizza, no more french bread pizza.  Also, was tonight's theme Adventures in Obecity?
A: The theme of tonights event has House Warming- hence the decoration give away. Not sure what you are asking about obecity, perhaps you meant obesity. If that is the case there were many options available ,other than the ones you mentioned, which individuals watching their weight could have chosen from.As for the french bread pizza, we will be trying many things in the brick oven area and this is but one of them.

Q: i love the new commons, and all of your hard work, but especially miss the old "plain tuna" without mayo often found in the salad bar. Will it make a return?
A: This is a rotational item on the salad bar.

Q: Christine, I feel the need to respond to the response to the senior's complaint about the last meal in commons (the response from March 5th).

To the disgruntled financial aid student,

Nobody cares who is on financial aid or not.  Nobody said someone paying the full tuition has anymore of a right to complain than you do.  Where do you get off making a ridiculous assumption like that? Yes, the napkin from Feb. 18 was rude and showed an incredible sense of entitlement.  But by saying it let down students who pay $45K was in no way a jab at financial aid students.  So take it easy, no one said you have fewer rights. The original poster and you can both complain however much you want, and the great thing about Bates is that people will listen to the complaints and post them here for all to see.  Now you both look like fools.  And while I myself will not feel embarrassed for people like you two (just because we go to the same school does not mean we have anything in common, such as false senses of entitlement or poor analytical reading skills), it does cast some doubt in my mind on the intelligence of some of my fellow students. There is much more to say about how much $45,000 is and how Bates compares to other schools (our endowment is terrible).  But this is not the place to do it

Sincerely,

A logical student whose financial aid status has no bearing on his right to free speech or anything related to dining services.
A: As you so correctly point out, that the napkin board is really not the place to talk about tuition.

Q: Glad to see so many comments (positive, negative, and neutral) on the napkin board.  Thanks for taking the time to respond to this huge influx of postings, especially in such detail. I want to comment on the February 18 posting regarding a senior's final experience in the old commons.  I, too (also a senior), was a little disheartened to eat my final breakfast, lunch, and dinner with paperware and plasticwear.  I understand why that was necessary, because I knew that the dish machine needed to be moved into the new facility.  So, I just tried to enjoy myself as much as I could because I am an educated student who knew the circumstances.  (Clearly others amongst me are not so informed.)  The reason I write however is to say how embarrassed I am that the poster has iterated the notion, "You sure let down a lot of people who pay over $45,000 a year to this school."  This sense of entitlement that many of my fellow students feel in regards to campus live drives me up a wall.  I appreciate the professionalism of the respondent to such a ridiculous statement.  However, I cannot be so proper.  Whomever feels that paying all this money to go here entitles them to anything in particular shouldn't be at Bates.  I, for one, am on a really good financial aid package.  So, does this mean that I should not be given things that full-pay students get?  No!  We are all the same here, or so we profess.  So, the fact that some students are full-pay does not give them the right to criticize Dining Services staff about how the final day of the old commons was.  All students who claim they are entitled to things because they pay all this money to go here need to have a reality check.  Money may make the world go 'round, but just because the poster may have money and I don't doesn't give them the right to critize a situation about which they clearly did not know the facts in the first place.

Signed,
Embarrassed to go to college with the likes of such people
A: Thanks for your support.

March 4, 2008

Q: I love new commons. When will the menu be back online?
A: They were , than they were not. Having technical problems associated with the move. We hope to have then worked out soon.

Q: I still haven't seen nutritional yeast available at breakfast. Will this be offered soon? And can we please have the vegan cooler stocked with organic peanut butter? I love that stuff. Thanks.
A: The nutritional yeast is located at the vegan station at all times and there is organic peanut butter in the choices cooler- I just checked.

Q: vegan brownies = tasty explosion in my mouth. seriously one of the best brownie experiences in my life, it was earth-shattering! so thanks to the awesome bakers!
A: Thanks for your kind words.

March 3, 2008

Q: The eggs whites this morning were very good, which got me to thinking could you offer them every morning instead of egg beaters?  I question egg beaters since they must have yellow dye in them to make them look that way.  Plus egg whites taste better.  PS all the food in new commons is so much better and fresher and there is so much variety.  All the hard work finally paid off.  Yay!
A: The reason we offer egg beaters on the line is that many people prefer them to regular eggs and they hold up better on a stean table then egg whites- which are available every day upon request.

Q: Feb 18th poster = unappreciative + out of line. We all appreciate the hard work you and your entire staff has put into the transition.  Thank you very much.
A: Thanks for your support.

Q: I just wanted to thank everyone who works at commons for all their hard work.  I am so impressed by the high quality food that you consistently serve and how genuinely friendly and wonderful everyone on the staff is to the students.  It is especially nice to have a "home cooked meal" feeling, even though I am thousands of miles away from my home.  I hope that the new commons is an improvement for those who work there because it is a wonderful treat for us students. Thank you all!!
A: Thanks for your kind words.

Q: With the Den now closing at 2 and the new emporium not opening its grill until 9, there's a big gap in the day where you can't get anything hot to eat (e.g. dinner) outside Commons.  Could you please provide an option for those of us not on the meal plan?  Either keep the Den open longer or start up the new grill sooner. Thanks! P.S.  We love the Den!
A:
Please note that an announce was sent out change the time to open the grill in Milts from 9:00p to 3:00p starting tomorrow.

Q: The new commons is beautiful. Thank you for all of your hard work. Is their any way to get whole wheat waffle mix for the waffle irons?
A: We are trying to locate some.

March 1, 2008

Q: The Den has gift cards.  Will Milts Emporium offer gift cards?  Maybe it would be possible that gifts cards would work in either location.
A: Yes it is.
