LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates sophomore Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Bobcats to a 17-12 victory over Division 2 Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday at Campus Avenue Field.

Bates (1-2) outscored SNHU 11-6 in the first half en route to its first win of the season. Junior Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) scored three times and assisted once, while sophomore Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) scored two goals and added three assists. First-year Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) and senior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) both scored twice for the Bobcats. Sophomore Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.) handed out two assists.

Libby Parent scored five goals for the Penmen (1-2), who were Bates' first Division 2 opponent since 1999. Laura Rotolo scored a hat trick for SNHU, and Carole Lee added two goals. Rotolo, Lee, Lucretia Joy and Julie Kraus handed out two assists apiece for SNHU.

Bates got on the scoreboard first with a Maciewicz goal in the second minute. Emmalee Willis answered for SNHU to tie the game just 30 seconds later, and the Penmen took their one and only lead of the game at 4-3 in the seventh minute.

Bates countered with four unanswered goals to take the lead for good. The first three of them came within 27 seconds of one another. Caroline Thomas's second goal of the game, an unassisted tally, was followed 13 seconds later by a Maciewicz goal, off of a draw control and assist by Bates sophomore Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.). Radis scooped up the ensuing draw control and streaked in for the unassisted goal and a 6-4 lead.

Senior defender Elizabeth Denver (Needham, Mass.) made it 7-4 in the 18th minute, when first-year goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) grabbed a ground ball, and passed ahead to Denver, who had over half an empty field in front of her and ran it in for her first goal of the season.

Parent stemmed the tide with an unassisted goal for SNHU 45 seconds later, but Thomas scored two straight for Bates for a 9-5 lead with 7:00 left in the first half, prompting a timeout for the Penmen.

Parent struck again on an assist from Lucretia Joy, but Bates closed out the half with unassisted goals by Maciewicz and Wagner in the final 30 seconds, giving Bates an 11-6 lead at intermission.

The teams traded six goals apiece in the second half, but Bates struck first with the first goal of the season by Dilworth, off another Pierce assist. Laura Rotolo scored two straight for the Penmen to close the gap to 12-8, but Bates put SNHU back in a six-goal deficit with a free-position goal by Wagner, followed right off the ensuing draw control by a second unassisted tally from Radis for a commanding 14-8 lead with under 23 minutes left to play.

Jennifer Parro closed the gap to 14-9 for the Penmen with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute, but Bates scored three unanswered goals by first-year Emily Howe (Carlisle, Mass.), Dilworth, and first-year Cecily Mauran (Providence, R.I.) , to take its largest lead of the season, at 17-9. SNHU scored three straight goals in the final 10 minutes to narrow the final score to 17-12.

Katie Clark made 14 saves for SNHU, as Bates outshot SNHU by a 40-25 margin. Krueger made 10 saves and earned the win for Bates in her first collegiate start.

Bates will next play at Amherst College in a NESCAC game on March 22 at 4 p.m.
