PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island College swept a softball doubleheader from Bates College on a cold and windy afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Friday. The host Anchorwomen won Game 1 8-0 and took Game 2 10-3, raising their record to 8-4, while the Bobcats remain winless with a 0-6 mark.

Bates junior captain Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) swatted her first home run of the season in Game 2 and went 1-2 in Game 1. Junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) was a combined 3-7 in the two games with an RBI, and sophomore Jill Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) had a pair of hits in Game 2.

Bates' doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at Brandeis has been postponed to a date to be determined. The Bobcats' next scheduled game is at NESCAC East rival Trinity College on Friday, March 28 at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at Trinity on March 29.

Senior Christie Lotti was a one-woman wrecking crew for RIC, going 5-for-9 with four runs scored, three RBIs, four stolen bases and a double.

The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one through the first two innings. Lotti recorded an RBI single, and later scored on a wild pitch, while freshman second baseman Amanda Perry also plated a run with a single as part of a three-run second frame.

RIC freshman designated hitter Laura DeNoncour blasted her first collegiate home run with a drive over the left field fence in the fifth inning and the Anchorwomen ended the contest early in the sixth on Lotti's two-RBI double.

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Deveines picked up her fourth win (4-2), hurling 4 1/3 innings, scattering three hits, before giving way to freshman Melanie Neece to close out the game. Neece allowed one hit, while striking out two, to preserve the shutout victory. Bates first-year pitcher Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) took the loss (0-2), allowing five earned runs on seven hits through 5 innings of work.

Game two started out as a closely contested game, with the Bobcats taking an early, 1-0, lead on Val Beckwith's RBI single off of Neece in the third inning.

The Anchorwomen regained the advantage, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame. Lotti scored on an error after leading off with a single, and first-year left fielder Donielle Mattoon knocked in the go-ahead run with a single of her own.

Bates wasted little time in tying the game up, 2-2, as Stacia Saniuk led off with an opposite-field homer to right field to start the fourth. The Anchorwomen took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a Kelsey Souza two-RBI single to left field.

Bates first-year starting pitcher Heather Dwan (Litchfield, Conn.) took the loss (0-2), allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two.
