1. Campus Construction Update: New dining Commons opens
About 1,000 Bates people put the new dining Commons to the test over dinner on Monday, Feb. 25. It was the first dinner served at the facility with the entire campus community back from winter break. "The building itself is an architectural symbol of what makes Bates so special," said President Hansen. "It is at once full of light, ennobling and inspiring, but also highly functional, designed for efficiency and sustainability." 2. Mount David Summit slated for Friday, March 28
The Mount David Summit, Bates' annual showcase of student academic achievement, highlights undergraduate research; creative work in art and performance; and service-learning. Opening in Pettengill Hall with a ceremony featuring the Bates Gamelan Orchestra at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, this year's summit includes a panel on Kosovo's independence, a play created by a politics class speculating about the discovery of oil in Gaza, and 110 posters explaining student research. Some 300 students are expected to participate, and the evening of the summit features dance and choral performances. www.bates.edu/go/news/0302

3. Corey Harris '91 returns to Bates as Mellon Learning Associate
Corey Harris '91, nationally acclaimed roots musician and recent recipient of a MacArthur "genius award," returned to Bates as a learning associate for a seven-day residency that includes work with classes and individual students. Video and slide show: www.bates.edu/go/news/0303

4. Bates receives national award for service
For the second year in a row, the Corporation for National and Community Service named Bates to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. www.bates.edu/go/news/0304

5. Jeremy Pelofsky '97 covers White House for Reuters

6. Bates' Mays Men attend Morehouse College inauguration
A group of male students, faculty and staff of African and Latino descent known as the "Mays Men" has emerged at Bates College. Founded in fall 2007 by Czerny Brasuell, director of the college's Multicultural Center, the group seeks to emulate the values that defined the phrase "Morehouse Men" during the Morehouse College presidency (1940-67) of Benjamin Elijah Mays '20, a mentor to Martin Luther King Jr. www.bates.edu/go/news/0306

7. Save the date for National Day of Service: April 26
Service to others is a Bates tradition. On Saturday, April 26, Bates current and former students, parents, families and friends will join together for the fourth National Day of Service, volunteering in their communities in 18 locations coast to coast.ت Service projects include building homes, restoring parks and working at food banks. 8. World Music Week explores music and dance of India, Indonesia
With the theme "Musical Legacies of South and Southeast Asia," Bates College students and faculty, as well as internationally esteemed performers, present the college's World Music Week from March 5 through March 15. Performers include the Bates College Orchestra and Bates Gamelan Orchestra, Indian dancer Aniruddha Knight and Indonesian composer Nano S. www.bates.edu/go/news/0308

9. John Tagliabue Poetry Fund is inaugurated
The John Tagliabue Poetry Fund, established in honor of the late nationally known poet and beloved professor emeritus of English at Bates, will be inaugurated at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 4 in the Edmund S. Muskie Archives at Bates. Leading poets Pamela Alexander '70 and X. J. Kennedy P'86, P'94 will offer a reading followed by a reception and book signing. The Rev. Peter Gomes '65, of Harvard University, was among prominent African Americans interviewed by PBS for the four-part series African American Lives 2. Meanwhile, The Boston Globe dedicated a column to firebrand journalist William Worthy '42, recipient of the Nieman Foundation's Louis M. Lyons Award. A leading New Hampshire paper named Jason Surdukowski '02 as one of the state's young movers and shakers in its "Forty Under Forty" profiles.
