Kendall, McNeil capture NESCAC Track and Field weekly awards
March 31,
2008
HADLEY, Mass. -- A pair of Bates College sophomores earned honors as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its first-ever Track and Field Athletes of the Week on Monday. Esther Kendall takes Women's Track Performer of the Week honors, while Rich McNeil was named Men's Field Performer of the Week. Kendall (Ridgeway, Ontario) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Snowflake Classic, in her first race since the cross country season, after spending the winter season on Bates' Nordic skiing team. With chunks of ice in the water barriers accentuating the experience on a sub-freezing day, Kendall took first place with a time of 12:27.50, scoring 10 points to help Bates to finish third out of 13 teams at the meet, just 1.50 points behind second-place Tufts. McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) scored big points for the Bates men at the Snowflake Classic at Tufts University on Saturday. McNeil led Bates to a third-place team finish by placing second in the discus throw (145-0), second in the shot put (44-11.75) and fourth in the hammer throw (158-6). The Bates men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Fitchburg State College this Saturday to compete at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Meet.
