April 20,
2008 LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 4 ranked Williams College Ephs scored a 6-3 NESCAC men's tennis victory at No. 23 Bates College Sunday at the Wallach Tennis Center. The Ephs ran their overall record to 14-2, 6-1 in the NESCAC. The host Bobcats saw their five-match winning streak conclude, and finished the regular season with a 12-4 record overall, 3-3 NESCAC. Williams won the top two doubles matches, with senior Dan Greenberg (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and junior Bret Thacher (Studio City, Calif.), the No. 2-ranked doubles pair in the Northeast Region, handing the No. 1 ranked pair, Bates junior Ben Stein (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka), an 8-4 loss, only their second of the year against NCAA Division III competition against 11 victories. Bates sophomores Maxwell Berger (Concord, N.H.) and Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles to keep the Bobcats in the match heading into singles. The match of the day occurred at No. 1 singles, where Greenberg, the top-ranked player in the Northeast, survived a 6-7(4), 7-5, (10-8) marathon against Stein, who is ranked No. 7 in the region. Stein erased a 5-0 deficit to pull out the first set in a tiebreaker. Berger also won at No. 4 singles for Bates, and sophomore Michael Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) won at No. 3 singles. Both teams now await word on pairings for the NESCAC Championships, which will be held at Middlebury College starting on Friday. Williams 6 Bates 3 Doubles Singles *Clinching match |
