Men's track and field 3rd at NESCAC Championships

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Bates College men's track and field team finished third out of 11 teams Saturday at the NESCAC Championships, riding a host of outstanding performances in the field events. Bates scored 84.50 points, ahead of fourth-place Wesleyan (67) and all other teams but Williams and Tufts.
Senior Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) won his second consecutive NESCAC title in both the shot put and the hammer throw, recording top heaves of 15.11 and 55.71 meters, respectively. First-year Christopher Murtagh (Rowley, Mass.) took first place in the javelin throw (54.94 meters) and
Sophomore Rich McNeil (Lawrence, Mass.) won the discus throw (42.75 meters), was second in the hammer (49.79) and third in the shot (15.01).
Other point scorers for the Bobcats included junior Jerome Bennett (Chicago, Ill.) in the pole vault (4.19 meters, 2nd), senior Matt Lopez (Lexington, Mass.) in the hammer throw (46.66, 5th), sophomore Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) in the discus throw (38.02 meters, 5th), senior Emmanuel Drabo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) in the triple jump (13.61 meters, 6th), senior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) in the 5,000 meters (15:32.08, 7th), first-year Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 400 hurdles (57.52 seconds, 8th) and sophomore Nicolas DeFrancis (Norwich, Vt.) in the javelin throw (46.09, 8th).
Next up for the Bobcats are the Division III New England Championships at Coast Guard, which begin with the men's decathlon on May 1 and carry through May 3.
