Bates College EcoReps

The 2007/2008 EcoReps worked tirelessly to bring recycling into the student life spotlight. Each EcoRep, responsible for a particular residential area, brought programming and information directly to their peers through:

  • Recycling Trivia  Game Night:  Over Chai and cookies, students outwitted each other in a test of trash and recycling. EcoReps developed trivia, and were creative in testing their fellows. Some made up mock trash bags which students had to empty and say recycling or not for each item.
  • Recyclemania! This campus-wide competition pit house against house and dorm against dorm to see who could recycle the most during a ten week period. EcoReps collected data, advertised the results, conducted outreach with their fellows and got the competition flowing.
  • Trashion Show: Where trash meets fashion. EcoReps advertised, organized and participated in this event!
Christine Arsnow
Christine is a Neuroscience major who likes to pretend she's not pre-med because she thinks it's nerdy. She likes running, laughing, being outside, and putting a bunch of food over lettuce and calling it a salad. Christine became anEcoRep because she thinks its imperative that college students become aware of the importance of recycling and other forms of environmental protection before we enter the real world.
Beth Lakin
Beth Lakin '08, when not comfined to her thesis lab, is a person of many interests. Hiking, reading, skiing, and "adventuring" are just a few of her favorite activities. On campus she is on Residence Life staff (She's the RC of Pierce, Milliken, and Whitter Houses), works in the Bates College costume shop, TAs for the wonderful CHEM 107/108A and is an occassional BOC participant---not to mention one of your fabulous EcoReps!!
Hannah Roebuck
Hannah is a sophomore Environmental Studies major concentrating in Health concerns. Growing up on a working tree farm in rural New Hampshire, the environment has been important to Hannah from a young age. Besides working as an EcoRep, Hannah's involved in the Environmental Coalition and lives in one of the two Sustainability Houses. She works in the Health Center and is a co-President of the Bates Dharma Society, the Buddhist and meditation group on campus.
Jenn Linton
Jenn is a senior Biochemistry major from Redding, CT. She is caption of the varsity volleyball team, and a Residential Coordinator in 280 College (the new dorm). After Bates, she plans to attend veterinary school before starting a career as a large animal veterinarian in New England. Her ties to environmentalism relate to her upbringing in an eco-friendly community, as well as the education she has received at Bates over the past three years.
Lindsay Swan
Lindsay is a first yeat student from Brooklyn, NY. She's a member of the Bates rowing team, and plans to become an English major and an Education minor. Growing up in the city, Lindsay has witnessed extreme pollution and climate abuse. She came to Bates because she was attracted to the attention and effort being given towards saving the environment. She hopes to get more involved with environmentalism, especially in terms of education the public on the issues.
Rob Friedman
Rob is a first year student who lives in Parker Hall. He is from Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and hopes to major in Environmental Policy. His tie to the environment stems from growing up in a town that has serious environmental problems. It motivated him to become involved in environmental issues. He was very active in high school, organizing the distribution of 500 CFL bulbs to classmates and was President of the Environmental Club.
Lucy Piacenza
Lucy is a senior Neuroscience major from Watertown, CT. She is happy to be using her peer-to-peer communication skills to help improve recycling on the Bates campus. Lucy appears to have become the go-to person to MC recycling-related events, which she thoroughly enjoys. She will be working for USPIRG next year, continuing her research/information spreading work into her real life beyond Bates.
Emily Grady
Emily is a sophmore from Littleton, MA and is an Environmental Studies major. She lives in one of the two sustainability houses and is active in the two student-run environmental organizations on campus. Emily's interest in the environment was triggered during her time at the Parker Charter School and augmented by her Maine Coast Semester at the Chewonki Foundation. When she graduates from Bates, Emily intends to pursue a graduate degree and career in environmental politics.
