GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The Bates College women's rowing team notched a first-place showing in the petite final of the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, leading the Bobcats to a fifth-place team finish as the Division III part of the regatta concluded Saturday at Lake Natoma.
Bates finished the competition with 12 points, fifth out of seven teams -- three points behind both Puget Sound and Ithaca, and three ahead of sixth-place St. Lawrence. Williams claimed its third straight NCAA title with 25 points. The Bobcats went to NCAAs for the first time last year and finished third.
Bates' first varsity eight, licking their wounds after getting edged by their chief competition in both Friday's elimination heat and grand qualifier, had the chance to demonstrate what made them the No. 3 ranked boat in Division III for most of the season. Bates led right from the start of the race, building a five-second lead by the halfway point and maintaining it over the final 1,000 meters. Bates finished in 7:07.47, ahead of runner-up St. Lawrence I (7:12.56), Trinity II, William Smith I, Washington College I and Ithaca II.
Bates' second varsity eight also fared well on Saturday, taking second place out of four boats in the third final in 7:28.76, behind Puget Sound II (7:27.62) and ahead of William Smith II (7:37.02) and St. Lawrence II.
Bates is powered in part by junior Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.), a two-time First Team All-America rower. Also rowing for Bates' first eight are first-year Rebecca Waldo '11 (Dracut, Mass.), Alison Frye '10 (Duxbury, Mass.), Ellen Patterson '11 (St. Louis Park, Minn.), Emma White '11 (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Caitlin Murphy '09 (Duxbury, Mass.), Laura Hubbell '09 (Yarmouth, Maine), Emily Chandler '09 (North Yarmouth, Maine) and coxswain Nora Collins '11 (Kensington, Md.). Chandler replaces the injured Liz Martin '10 (Williamstown, Mass.) on the first boat.
Bates' second varsity boat lines up as: Kara Constantine '08 (Beverly, Mass.), Brianna Belanger '09 (Millbridge, Maine), Emily Howieson '08 (Holliston, Mass.), Molly Newton '11 (Easthampton, Mass.), Danica Doroski '10 (Wayne, Pa.), Kirsten Laaspere '11 (Londonderry, N.H.), Lindsay Swan '11 (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Annie Connell '11 (Newburyport, Mass.) and coxswain Rachel Tofel '10 (Bronx, N.Y.). Davina Dukuly '11 (Lowell, Mass.) and Tracy Glazier '11 (Fairfield, Conn.) will also travel as spares.
Leading the Bobcats are head coach Andrew Carter and assistants Peter Steenstra, Ryan Sparks '05 and Delphine Clavreul.
