Bates College revolves around the academic calendar, which calls for a fall semester, a winter semester, a spring Short Term, and summer events . Both students and faculty have obligations that are bound to calendar deadlines, ranging from registration to tenure and promotion. The regular meetings of faculty governing bodies are also scheduled in advance.

Bates is a very busy place: the intellectual life of the College is robust and multifaceted. A wide range of programs is presented by faculty and students that are open to all. Athletic contests, music, dance, and theatrical performances highlight student achievement.
