Bates riders find 'vanpool' good and green, in more ways than oneNine Bates staff and faculty are among Portland-Lewiston commuters taking advantage of a new "vanpool" that combines the best features of a carpool and mass transit. Staff writer Doug Hubley is one of the riders who have found that GO MAINE's Van 39 cuts fuel costs, reduces carbon guilt and eases the stress of a daily commute. Bates Dance Festival begins July 15Showcasing the power and invention of contemporary dance and music, the five-week Bates Dance Festival launches its 26th season. Featuring some of the most acclaimed artists in dance, the festival's 2008 series offers works by established and emerging dance creators from the United States and abroad, introducing innovative approaches to art, technology and contemporary issues. Clean Sweep sale raises nearly $12,000 for local nonprofitsBates is one of a number of colleges and universities nationwide that benefit both local nonprofits and the environment by selling useful possessions donated by students as they head out at the end of the academic year. In June, the eighth annual Clean Sweep, the Bates "garage sale" of appliances, furnishings, electronics and other goods donated by departing students, raised nearly $12,000 in proceeds to be divided among 14 local nonprofit organizations. www.bates.edu/go/news/0703 5. Alumni eligible for help with graduate award applicationsGraduates from 2002 to 2008 are invited to contact the Bates Graduate Fellowships Committee for assistance in planning for postgraduate education and research. Made up of Bates faculty, administrators and Career Services staff, the committee reviews and supports applications for prestigious graduate awards. Recent graduates are eligible for a number of them, from the Rhodes to the Jack Kent Cooke. Bates names new vice president for college advancementBates has a new vice president for college advancement, a role that oversees the college's fundraising, alumni relations and communications operations. "We are extremely pleased to announce that Kelly Kerner will be joining Bates," said Bates President Elaine Tuttle Hansen. www.bates.edu/go/news/0705 7. Bates surpasses fundraising goal for 2007-08Bates has met its annual fundraising projection, and then some, for the fiscal year ending June 30. Preliminary results on June 27 showed that the College had raised just over $16 million in gifts from alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations. This amount is $500,000 above our projected $15.5 million and about $2 million more than last year, an increase of 14 percent. Included in this total is the Bates Parents Fund, which hit its fiscal year goal of $1 million. In an e-mail communication to the advancement staff, board member and advancement committee co-chair Bruce Stangle suggested that "to be up 14 percent in this (economic) environment is fantastic." 8. Did You Know?Bates hosted its fifth NCAA championship in June — the 2008 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship. It was a repeat visit for the national tennis championship, which first took place here in 2004. Bates also hosted the NCAA skiing championships in 1999 and 1976 and the NCAA Division III men's and women's indoor track and field championships in 1985. And number six is in the wings: Bates will be hosting the 2009 NCAA Skiing National Championships. www.bates.edu/go/news/0708 9. Bates People in the NewsFor an episode of the PBS television program Nova broadcast in April, popular car experts Tom and Ray Magliozzi interviewed Lee Lynd '79 about his efforts to create ethanol motor fuel from abundant, inexpensive plant materials. The Associated Press spent a half-hour interviewing centenarian Al Webber '28 during Reunion.
