Rupasinghe wins singles flight at Middlebury; Stein a finalist

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Senior Ben Stein made the finals of the Singles A Flight and junior Amrit Rupasinghe captured the title in the Singles B Flight on Sunday as the Middlebury Invitational concluded.

Having advanced to the B Flight semifinals on Saturday, Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) defeated Karl Furmaga 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday's semifinal, then beat Rick Devlin of Williams, 6-0, 7-5, for the flight championship.

Stein (Pelham, N.Y.), Rupasinghe's All-American doubles partner, defeated Conrad Olson of Middlebury, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 to set up a finals showdown with Bowdoin's Steven Sullivan. Sullivan prevailed for the flight crown, 6-4, 6-2.

In Saturday's action, Stein, the No. 2 seed in the Singles A Flight, got past Taylor Borda of Ithaca, 6-3, 6-0, then defeated Jeremy Weinberger of Williams 6-2, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinals.

Playing in the Singles B Flight, Rupasinghe defeated Greg Katz of Vassar, 6-3, 6-2, and Josh Rifkin of Ithaca, 3-6, 6-2, 10-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinals.

Also on Saturday, junior Adam Nielson (Den Haag, Netherlands) competed for Bates in the Singles C Flight, and coasted past Ithaca's Julio Rojas in the Round of 16, 6-0, 6-2, before being ousted by Middlebury's Derrick Angle, 6-0, 6-2.

Bates sophomore Sam Woods (Cambridge, N.Y.) and first-year Colby Maldini (Newington, N.H.) both competed in the Singles D Flight, losing in the first round.

Stein and Nielson teamed up to compete in the Doubles A Flight and defeated Vassar's Katz/Willner duo in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (5), but fell in the quarterfinals to Middlebury's Olsen/Peters team, 8-4. In the same bracket, junior Ryan Mannelly (New Canaan, Conn.) and first-year Nicholas Shadowen (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) won 8-5 over Middlebury's Bonfiglio/Malhame before bowing out against Williams' Thacher/Lebedoff duo, 8-4.

Bates first-year Sawyer Lawson (Concord, Mass.) and Woods paired up in the Doubles B Flight, as did Bobcats Maldini and senior Matthew Chamberlin (Canton, Maine), both in losing causes.
