Brown's late goal sends women's soccer past Husson

BANGOR, Maine -- Julie Brown scored the game-winning goal with just under 6 minutes to play as the Bates College women’s soccer team topped Husson University 3-2 on Tuesday. Husson drops to 10-3 while Bates moves to 4-6.

Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.) received a crossing pass from sophomore Katherine Bailey (Winchester, Mass.) and found the back of the net for her team-best sixth goal of the season. Bailey made a nice individual effort as she headed the ball past the defender to clear space for the pass.

Bates led at halftime 1-0 after Brown set up the first goal of the game. She served a corner to first-year Sam Alper (Holliston, Mass.) and Alper finished it off from 15 yards out.

Megan Clement tied the game 1:40 into the second half. Clement fought through traffic and beat first-year goalie Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) for her seventh goal of the season.

The Bobcats answered eight minutes later on another corner kick, when Alper set up first-year Courtney Talcott (Millbury, Mass.), for Talcott’s first career goal and Alper’s team-high fourth assist of the season. Husson tied the score at the 64th minutes as Samantha Homer got a through ball from Kylan Smith to beat Burns one on one.

Burns kept the game tied at two, as she finished with 2 saves. Both saves denied Husson’s Shelby Bradford the go-ahead goal. Bradford found space on two occasions and fired from 20 yards out but Burns made the save keeping it 2-2 setting up Brown’s game-winning goal.

Tatyana Wolterbeek had 6 saves against 16 shots.

In Bates' past four games, Brown has 5 goals and 2 assists while Alper has 4 goals and 2 assists. Brown and Alper remain tied with the team lead in points, with Brown now at 6 goals and 2 assists and Alper at 5 goals and 4 assists.

Bates travels to NESCAC rival Middlebury on Saturday  at 11 a.m.
