Rupasinghe, Stein finish fourth ITA Small College Nationals

MOBILE, Ala. -- Bates College's All-American doubles pair Amrit Rupasinghe and Ben Stein finished fourth in the NCAA Division III Men's Doubles portion of the ITA National Small College Championships, after falling to Washington University's Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland 7-6(2), 6-4 in Friday's third-place match. Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Stein (Pelham, N.Y.), who earned their bid to the tournament, held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center, by winning the doubles title at the ITA New England Championships earlier this month. Seeded No. 2 in an eight-team field, the Bobcat duo defeated David Maldow and Andrew Wang of Johns Hopkins University by a score of 6-4, 6-4 in their 1 p.m. match on Thursday, then moved on to face Emory University's Chris Goodwin and Michael Goodwin at 4:30, and the Emory pair defeated the Bobcats 7-6(5), 6-2 to advance to the tournament championship match (which they won). Rupasinghe and Stein moved on to the third-place match against Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland of Washington University in St. Louis, key members of the team that won the NCAA Division III team championship last May at Bates. It was a rematch of last May's NCAA quarterfinals, in which Rupasinghe and Stein prevailed by a score of 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-1. |
