Excursion:  We are offering an optional field excursion for the Saturday following the workshop. The excursion will begin in the morning with a trip by van to the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum http://www.bowdoin.edu/arctic-museum  at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine (40 minute ride from Lewiston-Auburn). The museum will be showing a special exhibit this spring titled: “Northward over the Great Ice: Robert E. Peary and the Quest for the North Pole”.   After the museum visit we will drive to the shore for a boat trip to Eagle Island State Park in Casco Bay, http://www.pearyeagleisland.org/ the island home of Robert Peary. The trip is a short ride by charter boat from marinas in either South Freeport or South Harpswell. The Peary residence museum on Eagle Island will likely be closed but we will likely have a guide and there are trails for exploring the island, one of many small beautiful
coastal islands that dot Casco Bay.  Box lunch will be provided. After return to the mainland we will stop in either Harpswell, Freeport, (the home of the LL Bean store) or Brunswick for dinner on your own. There will be an extra costfor this excursion to cover the cost of the box lunch and boat ride.  At this time the exact cost of the trip is unknown as the size and number of charter boats will depend on the number of interested participants. If you are interested in the excursion, please email Brenda Pelletier directly so we can see how many are interested and determine cost.  Email Brenda

Lodging:  We will have a block of rooms at the Hilton Riverwatch in Auburn and also listing of other local accommodations available.  Check out the Hotel and Lewiston page listed on side bar.

Research Themes:  The Arctic Workshop has grown out of a series of informal annual meetings sponsored by INSTAAR at the University of Colorado and other academic institutions worldwide.  In keeping with this tradition, there are no formalized topics, and the workshop is organized around themes developed from the abstracts submitted for presentation.  However, organizers can accommodate specific themes and arrange small group meetings for evenings or a pre-or post workshop meeting.  Please identify any special topics or needs by e-mailing mretelle@bates.edu

Support for Students:  Student participation is a vital component of this workshop.  A limited number of students giving a talk or poster will receive financial assistance, including registration and hotel support.

Acknowledgements:  Support for students is subsidized by the U.S. National Science Foundation.
