Workshop Announcement The 39th Annual International Arctic Workshop will be held April 21-24, 2009 on the campus of Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. The meeting is open to all interested in the Arctic and will consist of a series of talks and poster sessions covering all aspects of high-latitude environments, past and present. Previous Arctic Workshops have included presentations on Arctic and Antarctic climate, archeology, environmental geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, soil, ecology, oceanography, Quaternary history, and more. Please view links on left for more details. When: Registration and a reception is scheduled for Tuesday April 21 from 5 to 8 pm. The main program will begin on Wednesday the 22nd and run through Friday the 24th. An optional excursion to the Maine coast will be held on Saturday, if there is sufficient interest. Registration: To register on line click here Registration Excursion: We are offering an optional field excursion for the Saturday following the workshop. The excursion will begin in the morning with a trip by van to the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum http://www.bowdoin.edu/arctic-museum at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine (40 minute ride from Lewiston-Auburn). The museum will be showing a special exhibit this spring titled: “Northward over the Great Ice: Robert E. Peary and the Quest for the North Pole”. After the museum visit we will drive to the shore for a boat trip to Eagle Island State Park in Casco Bay, http://www.pearyeagleisland.org/ the island home of Robert Peary. The trip is a short ride by charter boat from marinas in either South Freeport or South Harpswell. The Peary residence museum on Eagle Island will likely be closed but we will likely have a guide and there are trails for exploring the island, one of many small beautiful Travel: Bates College is located in south-central Maine, approximately forty-five minutes from the Portland Jetport (PWM) and approximately three hours from Boston's Logan International, also Manchester, NH is about two-hours from Bates. Rental cars are available in all airports. We will try to organize van shuttle from the Portland Jetport or the Portland train station for workshop participants on Monday 21 or Tuesday 22nd during certain time blocks. Research Themes: The Arctic Workshop has grown out of a series of informal annual meetings sponsored by INSTAAR at the University of Colorado and other academic institutions worldwide. In keeping with this tradition, there are no formalized topics, and the workshop is organized around themes developed from the abstracts submitted for presentation. However, organizers can accommodate specific themes and arrange small group meetings for evenings or a pre-or post workshop meeting.
