CUMBERLAND, Maine -- The Bates College men's cross country team finished in third place out of 10 teams Saturday at the State of Maine Cross Country Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine at Twin Brook Recreation Area.

Bates scored 52 points, finishing behind Bowdoin (34) and Southern Maine (42) and ahead of Colby, Maine Maritime, St. Joseph's, the University of New England, UMaine-Farmington,  UMaine-Presque Isle and Thomas.

Sophomore Devin Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) led the way for Bates, finishing third out of 128 runners overall by covering the 8-kilometer course in 26:03.61. Junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) also earned All-State honors for the second straight year by finishing in the top seven, with a seventh-place time of 26:20.35, while first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) came in ninth place at 26:27.32.

Rounding out Bates' top seven runners were sophomore Tom Esponette (Auburn, Maine) in 15th place, first-year Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in 19th, senior Dillon Tung (South Pasadena, Calif.) in 24th and first-year Ben Chebot (Newton, Mass.) in 35th.

"I think we ran really, really well today, and I'm happy with our performances all around," said Bates head coach Al Fereshetian.

Bates returns to action on Nov. 1, when the Bobcats host the NESCAC Cross Country Championships at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. The men's race starts at 12 p.m.
