Jackson wins NESCAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week honors
October 27,
2008
Jackson (Durham, N.H.) figured in all three goals during Bates' crucial 3-2 conference victory over Wesleyan on Saturday, which kept the Bobcats' hopes alive for a berth in the NESCAC Championship. He led off the scoring with a goal assisted by first-year goalie Greg Watts and sophomore midfielder Dustin DiGregorio in the 35th minute, and made it 2-0 when he headed in a corner kick by junior forward Jonathan Lobozzo. Jackson returned Lobozzo's favor in the second half, as Bates added an insurance goal when Lobozzo headed in a ball inside the right corner, assisted on a crossing pass by Jackson. In his first year as a starter at midfield, Jackson leads the team in scoring with 8 goals and 2 assists. Jackson's performance Saturday lifted him into the top 10 in the conference in points per game (1.08; 10th) and goals per game (0.50; tied for 6th). He is Bates' first NESCAC Player of the Week since Robert Wesley-Munro '08 won the award Oct. 30, 2006. Bates (8-5, 3-5 NESCAC) has won three straight against MIT, Middlebury and Wesleyan, and looks to make it four in a row in Friday's regular-season finale, when the Bobcats host Colby at 3 p.m. In an ultracompetitive year for the conference, Bates likely needs a win against the Mules (7-5-1, 3-4-1) to make the expanded eight-team field of the NESCAC Championship. |
