Inaugural intrasquad Bobcat Cup closes out fall crew season

GREENE, Maine -- The inaugural Bobcat Cup, an intra-squad regatta, was raced for the first time on Tuesday, Oct. 28. The race was moved up a day in order to avoid an unfavorable forecast for Wednesday; however, we were not successful in doing so. Just prior to the start of the race a strong westerly wind became an even stronger southerly, resulting in rolling waves and almost un-rowable water. Due to these harsh conditions, the course had to be shortened from 5,500 meters to 1,800 meters.

“A couple of the coxswains took notice of the conditions, and adjusted their course to find the best water as opposed to the shortest distance. Clearly this was a wise choice,” said head coach Peter Steenstra.

Although the Men’s Varsity Eight (MV8) rowed the course in the fastest actual time (6:06.2), the Women’s Varsity Eight (WV8) won the cup according to the adjusted time. Their actual time was 6:31.2 followed by the M2V8 (7:01.7), W2V8 (7:58.5), and W3V8 (8:26.2).

With the adjusted times, the top three crews of the Inaugural Bobcat Cup were: WV8 (First; 5:36.6); MV8 (Second; 6:06.2); and W2V8 (Third; 6:35.9).

Following the race, a few members of the men’s squad went for a swim to symbolically close the books on the fall racing season. The next time the Bobcats hit the water will be during the team’s February break training trip in Austin, Texas.
