WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates College men's cross country team finished 13th out of 49 scoring teams Saturday at the Division III New England Regional Championships, led by sophomore Devin Dilts' All-New England performance.

Bates scored 330 points, topping such competition as 14th-place Springfield (370) and 15th-place Wesleyan (380). Williams won the team competition with 36 points, led by overall titlist Edgar Kosgey (25:52.7).

Dilts (Roscoe, Ill.) covered the 8-kilometer course at Mt. Greylock High School (the meet was hosted by Williams) in 26:57.1, good for 25th place overall out of 331 runners. Dilts' time was the third-fastest ever run at the Williams course by a Bates man. Dilts was also the second sophomore in the entire field to cross the finish line.

Missing by only one-tenth of a second his second straight all-region honors, which go to the top 35 finishers, was junior Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) who placed 36th in a time of 27:08.7.

Sophomore Tom Esponette (Auburn, Maine) came in next for the Bobcats, placing 73rd in a time of 27:51.8, his personal-best time on an 8K course by about 40 seconds, according to head coach Al Fereshetian. Rounding out Bates' top seven were first-year Troy Calandra (San Francisco, Calif.) in 94th at 28:20.8, first-year Sean Colligan (Goffstown, N.H.) in 102nd at 28:24.8, senior Dillon Tung (South Pasadena, Calif.) in 115th at 28:34.4 and sophomore Joe Musso (Wallingford, Conn.) in 147th at 29:23.4.
