LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College sophomore Brett Epler (Wellesley, Mass.) won the annual Bates Pentathlon on Saturday with a score of 3,168 points, the fourth best in school history and enough to qualify him for both the New England Division III and the ECAC Division III Championships.

Epler's time of 8.34 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles also qualified him for the New England Division III Championships.

Southern Maine's A.J. Marden finished second in the meet with 2,800 points, and Bates sophomore Monthe Kofos (Marlborough, Mass.) was third with 2,612.

Bates first-year Candido Bousquet (Colombo, Sri Lanka) suffered an injury during warmups and thus didn't finish the day's first two events, but he did compete impressively in the third event, the shot put, winning with a put of 44 feet, 7 inches, which qualified him individually in that event for the New England Division III Championships.
