Swim teams impressive at two-day Camel Invitational

The Bates women's team placed third out of five teams overall, scoring 458 points to place ahead of Wellesley (315) and East Stroudsburg University (241), and behind Connecticut College and Coast Guard. The Bates men, meanwhile, placed third out of three teams, behind Coast Guard and Connecticut College. Sunday's highlights for Bates included junior All-American Katelyn Drake taking first place in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke. Drake (Hudson, Ohio) finished the 100 back in 1:02.29 and the 200 back in 2:14.58. Sophomore Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) came away the victor in the 100 freestyle, registering a time of 54.81 seconds. Green was also third in the 200 free, at 2:00.97 First-year Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) put in a solid day's work, taking second place in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:34.32, in addition to third place in the 400 IM, at 4:51.63, as well as third place in the 1,650 yard freestyle, at 18:27.19. Bates also took second place out of 14 squads in the 200 medley relay, with Drake, Leasure, first-year Emily Tato (Chatham, N.J.) and Green timing in at 1:56.47. On the men's side, first-year Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) was third in the 100 fly at 55.31 seconds. Senior co-captain Christopher Berry (Augusta, Maine) won third place in the 100 back (56.13), with first-year teammates Nathaniel Depew (Hudson, Ohio) and Tom Boniface (Youngstown, Ohio) behind him in fourth and fifth places, respectively. The trio took the same three places on Saturday in the 50 back finals. Bates also took third and sixth places out of nine quartets in the men's 400 free relay final. The Bobcats are off for the semester, and will resume their season with their annual training trip to Deerfield Beach, Fla., which takes place Dec. 28 through Jan. 8. Their next meet is at Norwich University with the University of New England on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. Saturday Recap Highlights for the Bates men included taking third and fifth places out of eight squads in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and fourth and sixth places out of 10 squads in the 400-yard medley relay. Ned Scott took third place in the 50 butterfly at 24.51 seconds, and Christopher Berry finished third in the 50 backstroke at 26.04 seconds. The Bates women came in third out of 12 teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.82. Katelyn Drake took an impressive second place out of 24 competitors in the 50 back (29.64 seconds), as well as second place out of 28 competitors in the 200 individual medley (2:20.90). |
