The Bates College women's cross country team gives student-athletes the opportunity to compete at individual, regional and national levels. Team members are expected to train seriously over the summer and make a commitment to the team and to academics. Self-motivated student-athletes with a strong background of academic success and a desire to compete at the intercollegiate level should consider applying to Bates.
The season begins with several open invitationals in September and early October. The championship portion of the season lasts for about a month, with the team vying for Open New England, State of Maine, New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and ECAC titles before competing for a spot at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championship at the NCAA New England Regional Championship.
Early season races are generally 5 kilometers, but the ECAC and NCAA Regional Championships are the full 6-kilometer distance that is contested at the NCAA Championship.
2008 Recap
The Bates women's cross country team logged their third consecutive top-10 finish at the New England Division III Championship in 2008. The Bobcats finished eighth, which was one spot ahead of last year's finish. For the second straight year, the team was led by Esther Kendall ’10 (Ridgeway, Ontario), who finished the 6-kilometer course in 24:16.8, 43rd place.
The Bobcats also placed fifth at the ECAC Championship, up one place from last year's finish (top finisher Ngoc Pham '10, 32nd place). Bates hosted the 2008 NESCAC Championships at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine where they placed seventh (top finisher Chloe Bourne ’11, 27th place). Finally, for the second straight year, the Bobcats placed third at the State of Maine Championship (top finisher Chloe Bourne ’11, ninth place).
The team’s top seven runners at the regional meet in 2008 included three sophomores, three juniors and one senior, which bodes well for a successful 2009 season.
