EDWIN THOMPSON
Head Coach
2nd Year

In July 2008, Edwin Thompson became the 20th head baseball coach ever at Bates College. In his first year at Bates, Thompson led the Bobcats to a 12-22 record that included positive signs for a bright future. Several team records were broken, led by Chris Burke '11 establishing the team record for hits in a season (52) while earning NESCAC All-Conference honors in the outfield. Prior to coming to Bates, Thompson served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Maine at Farmington. In four years at UMF Thompson was in charge of the pitching staff, which was perennially in the top of the conference in various statical categories. The team also made the conference playoffs for the first time under the new format. During his time at UMF, Thompson recruited eight players who went on to win all-conference players, and four players who were selected to all-tournament honors. Coaching for various summer league teams, he also had the opportunity to coach five players who have been drafted by Major League teams, including the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 amateur draft.

Thompson graduated from Jay High School in Maine in 1998, where his teams made the playoffs each of his four years and he was selected as First Team All-State in his senior year. Thompson went on to NCAA Division I Howard University, where he was selected as the team's offensive rookie of the year. He then transferred to the University of Maryland, where he played in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, where ranked among team leaders in batting average and doubles. Thompson played his last two seasons at Webber University in Babson Park, Fla., where he played in the Florida Sun Conference All-Star Game and led the Warriors to a school record in wins, receiving an NAIA Top 25 national ranking as well as the program's first regional playoff berth. During the summers he played in some of the top summer leagues in the country, helping the Harrisonburg Turks in a Virginia Valley League championship, as well as playing in various college summer league World Series. He graduated from Webber with a B.s. in Business in 2003.

In 2003 Thompson had a brief minor league playing career with the Bangor Lumberjacks of the Northeast League, where he led all rookies on his team in extra base hits. He retired from playing in 2004 to pursue his coaching career.

Thompson started coaching at Jay Middle School basketball while also serving as Jay High School varsity baseball assistant coach, helping the team to its first conference title in 25 years. He also was the boys' varsity basketball coach at Jay High School for two years and saw improvement in wins each year. He also coached football, helping the team win a Western Maine championship.

Active in his profession, Thompson is a frequent speaker and clinician at various schools and camps throughout the region. He is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the New England Coaches Association, as well as the Black Coaches Association.

DAVE JORDAN
Hitting Coach
2nd Year

Hitting coach Dave Jordan is widely regarded as one of the top coaches in the state of Maine. Jordan coached four years at Poland Regional High School in Poland, Maine, leading the Knights to two Western Maine Regional Runner-up finishes and one Western Maine Conference regular-season title. Jordan was also recognized with sportsmanship awards in two of his years at Poland Regional. Jordan was named 2007 High School Baseball Coaches Association's District One (New England and New York area) Coach of the Year, and was one of eight finalist for National Coach of the Year.

Coach Jordan graduated from Springfield College in 1994 with a B.S. in Rehabilitation Services and received a master's degree in Occupational therapy in 1996. On top of have control and the hitters, he assists in recruiting, and is the winter camp director.

Coach Jordan lives in Poland, Maine with his wife Jodi.

TRAVIS DUBE
Pitching Coach
2nd Year

Travis Dube was a standout pitcher at Bowdoin College from 2000 to 2003, graduating in 2003 after serving as team captain his senior year. Dube finished his career with a 7-5 record and 10 saves, and was a NESCAC All-Academic selection. He returned to Bowdoin as an assistant coach from 2005 to 2007, tutoring four pitchers to NESCAC All-Conference honors and helping the Polar Bears to a school-best 28 wins and an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship tournament in 2006.

During the three years that Dube coached at Bowdoin, the Polar Bear pitching staff was in the top four in the NESCAC in earned run average, including the second-best team ERA in the league (3.30) in 2006. "Coach Dube is regarded as one of the top pitching coaches in the region," said Thompson. "Development is going to be the cornerstone of our program, and Travis knows the NESCAC and what it will take to be successful in this league." He graduated from Livermore Falls High School in Maine, where he was a standout athlete leading his team to a state championship in 1999 while coached by his father, Brian Dube.

BOB FLYNN
Bench Coach
38th Year

When you talk about Bates baseball, the conversation never meanders far from bench coach Bates Bob Flynn, who in 2010 will enter his 38th year with the Bobcats' baseball program.

Flynn, who is in his 13th year as head golf coach at Bates and is also an assistant Nordic skiing coach, has been a fixture in Bates athletics for 43 years. He was head skiing coach from 1968 to 1990 and was instrumental in the program's move to Division I competition in 1972, and in bringing the 1976 NCAA Skiing Championships to Bates. Flynn was also head baseball coach from 1991 to 1999.

Flynn is a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Sports Hall of Fame, the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame and the Maine Skiing Hall of Fame.

TYLER HANSON
Volunteer Assistant Coach
1st Year

Tyler Hansen enters his first season at Bates as the volunteer assistant coach. He is a 2009 graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington, where he led his team to two playoff appearances making it to the conference semifinal game his senior year while leading the Beavers in home runs. He was recruited by Coach Thompson and played three years with him on staff. Hanson was a team captain his junior and senior years at UMF. A 2005 graduate of Sanford High School in Maine, where he served as a team captain his senior year.

Hanson was a North Atlantic All Conference player as both a junior and a senior at UMF. Over 105 starts at catcher in his college career, Hanson hit .300, committed only 10 errors and recorded more walks than strikeouts.

During his summer in college, he played in for the D.C. Grays in the Clark Griffith League, leading the league in runners thrown out. He also played for the Protocol Stars of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation in New Jersey, helping the team win the regular season championship.

He has worked camps in the summer at the University of Maine, University of Hartford and the Top 96 Showcase.  He will be in charge of working with the catchers, as well as helping coordinate camps and travel.
