Swim teams dominant against Norwich, UNE

2009 NORWICH, Vt. -- The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned impressive victories in a tri-meet with the University of New England at Norwich University on Saturday. The Bates men defeated the host Cadets by a 73-49 score, while the Bates women defeated Norwich 118-16 and UNE 101-37. The Bates men started off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, as senior Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine), first-year Alex McKeown (South Windsor, Conn.), first-year Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) and first-year Matt Lipoff (Glencoe, Ill.) touched the wall first in 1:41.78. Scott also took first in both the 100 butterfly (55.56 seconds) and the 50 fly (24.33). Berry also took first place in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 55.72 seconds. McKeown also won the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 29.44 seconds. First-year Ryan Pitcairn (Newbury, Mass.) finished first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle, with a time of 10:55.34, and the 500 free, with a time of 5:14.60. First-year Dan Aupi (Branford, Conn.) touched first in the 100-yard individual medley, with a time of 57.95 seconds. The Bates women took first place in the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay as well as the meet-concluding 200-yard freestyle relay. The medley relay team of junior Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio), first-year Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.), senior Alexis Boyatsis (Dover, N.H.) and sophomore Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) took first place by over eight seconds in a time of 1:57.02. The 200 free relay team of Green, Drake, Leasure and first-year Tasha Dukuly (Lowell, Mass.) touched the wall first in 1:45.70. First-year Emily Tato (Chatham, N.J.) was a triple event winner, in the 1,000 free (11:10.13), the 100 free (57.02) and the 100 individual medley (1:06.01). Leasure won the 200 free in 2:00.76, as well as the 500 free in 5:23.95. Senior Hope Fleming (Guilford, Conn.) took first in the 50 back, with a time of 31.24 besting first-year teammate Carole Lupi (Branford, Conn.) by just 0.13 seconds. Lupi later won the 100 back with a time of 1:06.60 In the women's diving events, junior Annaliese Rudis (North Andover, Mass.) won the 1-meter over first-year Jessica Howard (Cumberland Foreside, Maine), 155.65 to 137.15, as well as the 3-meter by a score of 220.70 to 192.30. Bates stays in Vermont for a dual meet against Middlebury tomorrow at 12 p.m. |
