Program Notes

Ricky Weisskopf '08 was a four time All-American while at Bates.
The Bates College men's squash program gives student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the top collegiate competition in the nation. Student-athletes with a proven academic background and a tenacious attitude on the squash court should consider applying to Bates.

The majority of the season consists of dual matches, most of them against traditional New England Small College Athletic Conference and Ivy League rivals. Team members also have the opportunity to play in individual tournaments. The team portion of the season ends at the College Squash Association Team National Championships, which is followed by the CSA Individual National Championships the next weekend.

Season Recap 2008-09

The Bates College men’s squash team had a much different look this season as they said goodbye to four-time All-American Ricky Weisskopf and welcomed first-year head coach and Bates alum Pat Cosquer '97. Weisskopf, the most successful player in Bates squash history, stayed with the team as an assistant coach this season.

Even with the graduation of Weisskopf and Sean Wilkinson, two of the program’s most successful players ever, the team continued its perennial success under new coach and player leadership. The 2009 squad was led by the team’s four seniors including captain Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.) as well as the team’s two talented juniors Jordan Greenberg (Malvern, Pa.) and Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.).

Mahan took over the No. 1 spot in the team's lineup, while sophomore Will Katz (Bronxville, N.Y.) moved up to the No. 2 spot. Greenberg and sophomore Matt Marchisotto (New York, N.Y.) followed in the third and fourth spots, respectively, in most matches. Sophomore Nick Echeverria (Washington, D.C.), first-year Bobby Burns (Greenwich, Conn.) and seniors Russell, Marc Taggart Skippack, Pa.), Charlie Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) and Deacon Chapin (Cambridge, Mass.) competed for the final five playing spots in each contest.

The Bobcats finished the season with an impressive 16-8 record and posted a solid 6-2 record in NESCAC play. At the College Squash Association Team Nationals, Bates finished the season ranked 11th in the nation. The Bobcats first defeated Navy 7-2, and went on to avenge an earlier loss in the season to Franklin & Marshall, winning 6-3, then fell just short against the University of Western Ontario, 5-4. Mahan and Katz went on to compete in the CSA Individual Nationals. This was Mahan's second appearance in the CSA Individual Nationals and Katz's first appearance. Both Mahan and Katz had tremendous runs at Nationals before bowing out in the semifinals of separate Molloy Cup brackets.

Mahan also gained post-season recognition when he was selected to the NESCAC Men's Squash All-Conference First Team. After vaulting from the No. 3 position on the team last year to the No.1 position this year, Mahan excelled, posting a 13-7 individual singles record.

While the Bobcats will miss the leadership and talent of the 2009 senior class, Cosquer will continue the Bates squash tradition of consistency as the team’s top four players return with ample amount of talent waiting in the wings.
