Program Notes
The majority of the season consists of dual matches, most vs. traditional New England Small College Athletic Conference and Ivy League rivals. Team members also have the opportunity to play in individual tournaments. The team portion of the season culminates with the Howe Cup Team National Championships, followed by the College Squash Association Individual National Championships two weeks later. Season Recap 2008-09 The Bates College squash team was under new leadership this year with the return of former Bates squash player Pat Cosquer '97 as the team’s new head coach. The Bobcats were led by five seniors, including captain Margot Webel (Locust Valley, N.Y.). Junior Hannah Laverty (Brooklyn, N.Y.) returned as the team’s No. 1 player from last year. Junior Whitney Roller (Haverford, Pa.) and Webel moved up into the second and third spots vacated by graduating seniors. Also moving up from last year was senior Sarah Blomstedt (Gill, Mass.) playing in the fourth spot. First-year Mimi Neal played in the fifth spot followed by senior Sophie Runquist (Kent, Conn.), first-year Anna Hogeland (Williamstown, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.). The ninth spot rotated amongst a number of players throughout the season. The Bobcats finished the season with an 11-10 record, including a 4-3 record in NESCAC play. At the College Squash Association Team Nationals, Bates finished the season ranked 14th in the nation. The Bobcats lost their first match to Mount Holyoke, 7-2, but came back and defeated Hamilton College 9-0. The Bobcats rounded out the tournament with a tough 6-3 loss to Middlebury. Laverty and Roller went on to compete in the CSA Individual Nationals. Roller fell in the opening round to Shara Robertson of Mount Holyoke, 9-6, 9-0, 9-5. Roller moved on to the consolation bracket, where she defeated Eleanor Weiss of Vassar in straight games, 9-6, 9-4, 9-2 before falling to Middlebury’s Virginia Shannon in the consolation quarterfinals of the Holleran Cup (A Division). Laverty won her opening round match in the Holleran Cup (A Division) draw Laverty defeated Eleanor Weiss of Vassar 9-5, 9-4, 9-4, before falling to Emery Holton of Trinity in the Round of 32. Also gaining recognition after the season was Cabot, who was named to the NESCAC Women's Squash All-Conference Second Team. Cabot is the first Bates woman to be named All-NESCAC in women's squash, in the second year of the all-conference team's existence. A mainstay in the No. 8 position all season for the Bobcats, Cabot accumulated a singles record of 16-3 on the season, winning her final 10 matches and 16 of her last 17. The Bobcats return many of their top players to next year’s squad, which bodes well for continued success for the Bates women’s squash team in 2009-10. |
