Women's hoops team puts away Camels, 73-58

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) scored 19 points, senior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) added 13 and first-year Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) dished out 10 assists as the Bates College women's basketball team defeated Connecticut College for the 14th straight time, 73-58, in a NESCAC contest Friday night at Alumni Gym.

The win pushes the Bobcats to 15-5 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC, and matches their win total from each of the past two seasons. The visiting Camels dropped to 7-11 overall, 0-5 in conference.

Kim Horne led Connecticut College with 14 points, while Jennifer Shinall added 13 and Emily Cummings had 11 points with 8 rebounds. Laura Coderre chipped in with 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Bates outrebounded Connecticut College 47-39 and held the Camels to 27.0 percent shooting from the field in the game while the Bobcats made 46.4% of their own shots. Bates outscored Connecticut College 40-16 in the paint and 22-8 in bench points and totaled 24 assists on its 26 field goals in the game.

Yanofsky and Burns tied for the team lead with 7 rebounds apiece; Yanofsky also blocked three shots and made three steals. First-year guard Amanda Gifford (Lee, Maine) came off the bench to notch 5 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Bates jumped out to leads of 8-2 and 15-9, but the Camels came back with an 8-0 run to take their lone lead of the game at 17-15, on the strength of a three-point play by Coderre and a three by Horne.

Bates responded with a 15-1 run over a five-minute spanfor a 30-18 lead with 7:12 to play in the first period. Yanofsky keyed the run with 4 points and 2 assists. Bates expanded the lead as high as 16 at 40-24 with 2:25 left in the period before the Camels closed out the half with eight straight points, and the teams headed into intermission with Bates on top 40-32.

The Camels threatened to make it a close game early in the second half, when they cut a 46-34 Bates lead to 5, with jumpers by Cummings and Horne followed by three free throws by Jennifer Shinall after she was fouled on a three-point attempt. First-year Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) bumped the lead back to 8 for Bates with a three, but Jacqueline Shinall answered with a three of her own to make it 49-44 with 15:48 to play.

But the Bobcats held the Camels to only two points over the next eight minutes while scoring 12 of their own, putting them back into a comfortable lead at 61-46 with 8:17 to play. Bates cruised from there, leading by as many as 18 (71-53).

Bates will host Wesleyan University tomorrow at 3 p.m. in its final regular-season home game; Connecticut College travels to Tufts University tomorrow at 3 p.m.
