More solid performances for alpine at UNH Carnival

JACKSON, N.H. -- The Bates College alpine ski team placed fifth out of 10 teams in both the men's and women's slaloms Saturday at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival, with numerous impressive performances.

The combined Bates alpine and Nordic ski teams placed sixth out of 11 teams at the carnival, with 646 points. The Bobcats weren't far behind Middlebury (674.5) and Williams (665) and were able to place well ahead of rival Colby (575).

Sophomore Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) had her second straight strong day, fininshing ninth out of 55 competitors with a two-run combined time of 1:40.25. Senior Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) tied for 12th with a time of 1:40.68, and seniors Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) and Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) were 21st and 22nd, respectively, at 1:41.60 and 1:41.65.

First-year Alex Jones (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) led the Bates men in the slaloms with a two-run combined time of 1;31.22, good for eighth place out of 58 competitors. Sophomore Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) came next in 13th place (1:31.59) and sophomore Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) was 15th in 1:31.75.

JACKSON, N.H. -- The Bates College alpine ski team's trio of senior women captains all came through with top 14 performances in the giant slalom on Friday at the University of New Hampshire Winter Carnival.

Megan Papineau placed sixth out of 55 competitors in the GS with a two-run combined time of 2:27.51. Liz Thompson came in 13th place at 2:28.23 and Emily Sampson was 14th at 2:28.47. Close behind were first-year Kristin Waddle (Harpswell, Maine) in 16th at 2:28.82 and Micaela Holland in 18th at 2:29.16 in the team's most complete one-day performance in some time. The women were fourth out of nine teams in the women's GS.

The Bates men were seventh out of 10 teams in the GS, led by first-year Bump Heldman (Auburn, Maine) in 15th out of 58 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:20.43. Ben Manter tied for 17th at 2:20.60 and Alex Jones was 19th in 2:20.78.
