LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College swimming and diving teams broke a pair of Tarbell Pool records on Saturday in a tri-meet with Wheaton (Mass.) College and NESCAC rival Tufts University.

In team scores, the Bates men defeated Wheaton 170-110 and fell to Tufts 202.5-105.5. The Bates women fell to Wheaton 172-120 and to Tufts 188.5-105.5.

First-year Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) recorded the Tarbell Pool record in the 50-yard butterfly, finishing in a first-place time of 23.79 seconds. His performance tops the former record of 24.35 seconds set by Mike McCollum of Middlebury in 1996 (McCollum later was assistant coach and interim head coach at Bates).

Meanwhile, Bates junior Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) set the pool record in the 200 back, with a time of 2:09.55, smashing the former mark of 2:11.15 set by Wesleyan in 1993.

Drake also won the 200-yard individual medley in a lifetime-best time of 2:15.34.

Other event winners for the Bates women included sophomore Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) in the 100 free (53.87) and first-year Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.16). Senior six-time All-American Kelsey Lamdin (Brunswick, Maine) won the 1-meter diving with 276.60 points in her first meet of the season, an impressive NCAA Championship consideration performance.

Also winning for the Bates men were senior Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine) in the 200 back (2:03.02) and first-year Ryan Pitcairn (Newbury, Mass.) in the 500 free (4:59.30). Berry led a 1-2-3 performance for Bates in the 200 back, with first-year Nathaniel Depew (Hudson, Ohio) in second at 2:04.05 and first-year Tom Boniface (Youngstown, Ohio) third in 2:04.15.

"The team swam very well, especially in the mid-distance events -- which is a great sign that we are right where we need to be at this point in the season," said Bates head coach Peter Casares.
