Proxy Server Setup Instructions: Macintosh

If you are not prompted for a Bates username and password, these instructions explain how to connect to the proxy server, which identifies you as an authorized Bates user when you're connecting via a non-Bates internet service provider. When configured properly, any Bates web page that requires proxy server access will ask for your network user name and password before loading. Included are configuration settings for Firefox and Safari.

A. FIREFOX: FOR MACINTOSH OS 10.4.11 and OS 10.5x

  1. Under Firefox > Preferences
  2. Click on Advanced > Network
  3. Under Connection: Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet
  4. Click Settings
  5. Click to place a checkmark in Automatic proxy configuration URL
  6. Type in: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  7. Click ok to exit the settings, and
  8. Click Reloadon the webpage

B. FIREFOX: FOR Macintosh OS 10.4.2:

  1. In Firefox, Under Menu > Preferences > General > Connection Settings...
  2. Select Automatic Proxy Configuration URL
  3. Type URL: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  4. then Click OK to exit the settings, and
  5. Click reload on the webpage
C. FIREFOX: MACINTOSH (OS 10-10.4):
  1. Open Firefox
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options
  3. Under the Advanced Category
  4. Click on Network tab
  5. Click Automatic Proxy Configuration URL radio button
    Type this URL:
    http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  6. Click Reload, then Click OK
  7. When you try and access one of the pages, you will be prompted for your Bates username and password.
To disable the proxy server:
  1. Reselect Direct Connnection to the Internet
  2. Click OK and restart Firefox.

D. SAFARI: MACINTOSH OS 10.5x

  1. Under Safari > Preferences > Advanced
  2. Under Proxies: Click Change Settings
  3. This brings up the network system preferences window, followed by the proxy configuration window
  4. Under Select a protocol to configure,  (Proxy configuration) scroll and click to checkmark Automatic Proxy Configuration or what allows a url to be typed in, not manual proxy
  5. Type in: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  6. Click ok (and if prompted click apply)
E. SAFARI: MACINTOSH OS 10-10.4x
  1. Open Safari
  2. From the Safari menu, select Preferences
  3. Double-click on Advanced
  4. Next to Proxies click Change Settings...
  5. Click on the Web Proxy (HTTP) radio button
  6. Use automatic configuration settings
  7. In the text box labeled "Address" enter the URL: http://proxy.bates.edu:81/bates.pac
  8. Press the Apply Now button
F. SAFARI FOR MACINTOSH OS 10.4.2:
  1. In System Preferences > Network > double click on your current network connection > Proxies > Select Web Proxy (HTTP)
  2. In the Web Proxy Server box, type
    abacus.bates.edu:81
  3. Put a check in Proxy server requires password
  4. Click the Set Password...
  5. Enter your Bates Username and Password
  6. Click Ok
  7. Click Apply Now
  8. To turn the Proxy Server off, uncheck Web Proxy (HTTP)
    Note: All web pages accessed while the Proxy Server is on will be logged. Please use the Proxy Server only to access Bates related materials.
  9. To disable the proxy server:
    1. Deselect the Web Proxy button (Step 5)
    2. Then press the Apply Now button
G. LOGIN:
  1. When you have installed these preferences correctly on your machine, and you attempt to open a protected site from off-campus, a dialog box will appear asking for authentication:
  2. Enter your network user name and password
